Raspberry

Raspberry cultivation: less growing stress = higher production

There are both summer-fruiting and autumn-fruiting raspberries. As is the case with blackberries, the most commonly grown raspberry varieties have a two-year cycle. The first year is cane growth and these won’t fruit until the second year (summer raspberries). Conversely, autumn raspberries already produce fruit in the first year.

When growing propagation material, particular attention has to be paid to good root development and to limiting plant stress; both are boosted by actively stimulating plant resilience. Biostimulants have been developed specifically for this purpose, so adjust your cultivation strategy accordingly. Focus on this not only during propagation but also when the raspberry plants are in full production.

SalicylPure boosts root development during propagation

During cultivation/propagation, the raspberry plant is especially susceptible to, for example, a lack of moisture or heat. How the plant deals with this largely depends on its growth balance and resilience. To optimise this growth balance and resilience in (particularly) a natural way, we recommend that you treat the parent plants and root blocks weekly with SalicylPure. The willow bark extract in SalicylPure promotes root development in particular. This results in planting materials that grow quickly from the very start. Furthermore, a more resilient crop has a greater capacity to absorb water and nutrients throughout propagation.

Delphy: SalicylPure in raspberry propagation results in a better root system

Application of SalicylPure during the propagation of raspberry plants results in a better root system, good root quality and a high number of canes. Application on the root blocks results in many additional cuttings; 50% more cuttings is no exception!

Green vitamin booster ArgicinPlus stimulates planted out raspberry cuttings

As is the case during propagation, growing conditions are often critical and stressful for cuttings that have been planted out. Particularly in the early days, this propagation material requires ‘a little extra’. ArgicinPlus is our ‘green booster’; it also contains willow bark extract, along with silicon and colloidal silver. Under stressful conditions, ArgicinPlus boosts plant resilience and total production. It promotes the plant’s capacity to absorb water and nutrients.

Recommended dosage/advice for use – SalicylPure and ArgicinPlus (raspberry propagation)

  • Parent plants: drip feed 1.0 l/ha SalicylPure weekly
  • Root blocks: spray 1.0 l/ha SalicylPure weekly
  • Planted out cutting: spray 1.0 l/ha ArgicinPlus weekly

Commercial raspberry growing: use silicon as standard

To make the young commercial crops resilient and especially to grow firm fruit, we recommend drip feeding SilicaPower every week. SilicaPower is a biostimulant, that contains a high concentration of silicon that is easily absorbed by the plant. It literally strengthens cell walls and makes them firmer. If your crop has to deal with rapidly worsening stress conditions whilst growing, such heat or drought, switch to a weekly schedule of ArgicinPlus instead of SilicaPower.

Delphy research: firmer fruits with fewer broken off drupelets

Research by Delphy ISFC into the commonly grown raspberry variety Tulameen demonstrates the added value of SilicaPower. Particularly when harvesting and storing the fruits, they are firmer with fewer broken off drupelets.

Recommended dosage/advice for use - SilicaPower and ArgicinPlus (commercial raspberry growing)

  • In commercial raspberry growing, our basic advice is to drip feed SilicaPower at 0.35 l/ha every week. Do this from the time that the crop starts growing, until 4 weeks before the end of the harvest.
  • In the event of severe stress conditions, switch to weekly spraying of ArgicinPlus at 1.5 l/ha and repeat this whilst the stress conditions continue.

Problem-free irrigation in raspberry cultivation

Providing your raspberries with sufficient clean water every day isn’t something that can be taken for granted. A basin full of algae or a blocked dripper can easily throw a spanner in the works. Stay ahead of problems by using our water-maintenance products - Blue Bac-1 and Blue-Bac-2 – every month. These bacterial products will clear your basin or silo, but will also prevent blockages and stop a 'green film' from forming.

Use Blue Bac-1 for a green basin or water silo

Blue Bac-1 is a bacterial product based on useful and harmless bacteria. These bacteria make short work of algae growth and also assist in the digestion process of dead algae. This will clean your basin and/or silo and they will remain clean.

Recommended dosage/advice for use - Blue Bac-1

  • Start early in the spring (April) but wait until the water is at least 15°C, administer at a dose of 2 litres of Blue Bac-1/500 m3 of basin water.
  • Repeat this once a month until the end of the growing season, at a dose of 1 litre/500 m3 of basin water.
  • To achieve the best effect, add Blue Bac-1 as far away from the intake point as possible, to ensure it is mixed optimally through the water storage. To achieve this, the water has to be pumped horizontally through the basin.

Clean pipes and drippers with Blue Bac-2

The Bacillus bacteria in Blue Bac-2 help to clear organic contaminants from your irrigation system and drippers. The bacteria in the water-maintenance product produce enzymes that form a natural ‘coating’ which organic contaminants, such as sand, cannot adhere to. The use of Blue Bac-2 also stimulates root development of raspberry plants.

Recommended dosage/advice for use - Blue Bac-2

  • The starting dose of Blue Bac-2 is 5 litres/ha. This dose can be given in a single shot from a separate fertiliser injector, or added to the day storage tank or A fertiliser feeder. Repeat this starting dose once a month until the end of the growing season. The dose then continues to be 5 litres/ha.
  • Also pay attention to aerating the irrigation water properly, using a Venturi or waterfall. Both improve the effectiveness.

Tip – take care with hydrogen peroxide

The recommended products, SalicylPure, SilicaPower and ArgicinPlus, cannot be used in irrigation water to which hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) has been added. Contact our advisor Alwin Scholten to discuss our solution if you nevertheless wish to use hydrogen peroxide in addition to the recommended products.

Blue Bac-1 and Blue Bac-2 are natural alternatives to H2O2 or other chemical disinfectants.
