Potted Anthurium

Resilience of potted anthurium starts with strong roots

The potted anthurium is a sought-after houseplant that produces flowers almost continuously. This requires optimal growing conditions with sufficient light, moisture and nutrition. In addition, it is essential that the plants are healthy and resilient and have a well-developed root system. A vigorous plant can be achieved by applying fertilisers and biostimulants from the time that cuttings are taken, onwards. For the different stages of growth of the potted anthurium, we have various – 100% natural – products and solutions that not only make the plants more robust, but also improve yield. Read below about which customised resilience improvement solutions we can offer you for each growing phase.

Treat plugs grown in single units with ArgicinPlus → fewer failures

The propagation of plugs grown in single units (cuttings) at the propagator is delicate, specialist work in which a lot of attention is paid to the development of a good root system. To ultimately deliver robust cuttings to the grower, we recommend that, after it has been cut and before delivery to the grower, the cutting is treated with our CE-marked fertiliser ArgicinPlus. This fertiliser, which contains urea, also contains silicon (orthosilicic acid), willow bark extract and colloidal silver.

  • When it is built into the cell walls, silicon strengthens the stalk and leaf. Silicon also improves the internal transport of moisture, so that water and nutrients reach their destination more easily; drought stress is less of a problem.
  • The willow bark extract boosts the plant’s own defence system and plays an important role in root development. It encourages faster and more uniform growth; the plugs grown in single units grow better and more evenly and have a greater capacity to absorb water and nutrients. After potting on, you will experience significantly fewer failures.

It is preferable that, before delivery, the plugs are dipped in a dipping basin. This gives the cutting more time to absorb ArgicinPlus so that it is more resilient when it is potted on. An alternative to dipping is irrigation.

Recommended dosage/advice for use - ArgicinPlus in the propagation of plugs grown in single units - potted anthurium (dipping)

  • Add 0.2 litres of ArgicinPlus to 50 litres of water (= 2 litres/500 litres of water) to a dipping basin and dip the plugs in this mixture for at least 15 minutes.
  • If you decide to irrigate, the required concentration for the solution is 1 litre of ArgicinPlus to 500 litres of water.

This step can also be performed by the grower before the plants are potted on. If the grower decides to irrigate the plants after they have been potted on, instead of dipping them beforehand, the advantage of this is that the plants immediately receive sufficient water. In both cases, subsequently you can continue with biological crop protection without any further waiting periods.

Build up and maintain plant resilience during growing and finishing with ArgicinPlus

After potting on, we recommend that ArgicinPlus is continued during further cultivation (growing and finishing). This will maintain plant resilience, the plants are more robust and there are fewer stress conditions. It is known that a resilient and strong plant is less susceptible to infections and to piercing pests.

Recommended dosage/advice for use - ArgicinPlus in potted anthurium growing

  • Spray 2.0 litres of ArgicinPlus per hectare per week.

Repeat weekly until the crop is ready to sell. It is useful to know that applying additional silicon will result in potted anthuriums with thicker leaves and a darker colour.

Pests will avoid the plants after BioSecta has been applied

Feeding potted anthuriums specifically with the herb extract-enriched CE-marked fertiliser BioSecta will improve the vitality of plants and they will be healthier and better developed with larger leaves. These plants emit fewer stress signals.

Recommended dosage/advice for use - BioSecta in potted anthurium

  • 2 litres of BioSecta per hectare per week. In a young crop, 1.5 litres may suffice.
  • BioSecta can be sprayed or administered via LVM (low volume misting). In LVM, use 2 litres of BioSecta along with 10 litres of water.
  • BioSecta goes hand-in-hand with the use of natural enemies, bees and bumblebees.

Keep your irrigation water clean with Blue Bac

Being able to supply the crop with plenty of clean water every day isn’t always a given. A basin full of algae or a blocked dripper can soon lead to problems. Stay ahead of problems with contaminated feed water by using our - 100% natural – water-maintenance products Blue Bac-1 and Blue-Bac-2 every month. These bacterial products won’t only clear your basin or silo, but will also prevent a green film from forming and blockages.

Use Blue Bac-1 if your basin or water silo turns green from the algae

Blue Bac-1 is a bacterial product based on useful and harmless bacteria. These bacteria compete with algae for nutrition. Over the course of just a few weeks or months, they will die. They also assist in the digestion process of dead algae. This ensures that your basin and/or silo will become clean and stay clean.

Recommended dosage/advice for use Blue Bac-1

  • As a starting dose, administer 2 litres of Blue Bac-1 /500 m3 of basin water in the spring. The best result can be expected at a water temperature upwards of 15°C (usually in mid-April).
  • Repeat the application of Blue Bac-1 every month at a dose of 1 litre/500 m3 of basin water.
  • To achieve the best effect, Blue Bac-1 should be mixed through the water thoroughly, moving horizontally. Therefore, add the product as far away from the intake point as possible. Thorough aeration using a Venturi or waterfall also improves the effect.
  • Important! Stagnant water is ideal for algae growth and it does not thrive as well in moving water. Therefore make sure that the basin water moves horizontally. The bacteria in Blue Bac-1 will then do the rest.

With Blue Bac-2 you can achieve clean pipes and drippers

The Bacillus bacteria in Blue Bac-2 help clear organic contaminants from your irrigation system and drippers. The enzymes formed by these bacteria form a very smooth 'coating' on the inside of the pipes, which organic contaminants such as sand and, for example, phosphate deposits, cannot adhere to. The use of Blue Bac-2 also has a positive effect on the root development of the plants and helps you to maintain the pH (stability) of your feed water.

Recommended dosage/advice for use Blue Bac-2

  • As a starting dose, administer 5 litres of Blue Bac-2/ha, in a single shot from a separate fertilizer injector or add to the day storage tank or the A fertilizer feeder. Ensure good aeration of the irrigation water by using a Venturi or waterfall. Both improve the effectiveness of Blue Bac-2.
  • Repeat this dose once a month until the end of the growing season.

If you use hydrogen peroxide, read this tip!

The recommended products ArgicinPlus and BioSecta cannot be used in irrigation water to which hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) or another oxidizing product (containing chlorine) has been added. Blue Bac-1 and Blue Bac-2 are natural alternatives to H2O2 or other chemical disinfectants. Contact our advisor (see below) to discuss our solution if you nevertheless wish to use hydrogen peroxide at the same time as Argicin-Plus and BioSecta.
