Phalaenopsis

Growing healthy Phalaenopsis starts with the roots

A well-developed root system is essential for strong Phalaenopsis plants. From the very beginning, focus your cultivation efforts on maintaining strong and healthy roots. Vigorous plants are better equipped to withstand abiotic stress.

Below is our integrated cultivation strategy, combining scientific research with practical experience.

1. Healthy start to cultivation with ArgicinPlus - lower failure rate, stronger roots

The first weeks of cultivation are crucial. Our CE fertiliser ArgicinPlus plays a key role in strengthening young plants. Its combined composition of silicon (orthosilicic acid), willow bark extract and colloidal silver delivers wide-ranging effects:

  • Silicon strengthens cell walls and improves the internal transport of water and nutrients.
  • Willow bark extract stimulates root development and accelerates growth.
  • Silver particles support the plant’s natural defence system.

This combination results in more vigorous plants with stronger root systems. Propagation material establishes more quickly, develops new roots faster, and growth is more uniform.

Recommended dosage:

  • Dip before potting: 0.2 litres of ArgicinPlus per 50 litres of water (= 2 litres/500 litres of water), dip for at least 15 minutes.
  • Irrigation (alternative): 2 litres per 500 litres of water for young plug plants.

2. Maintain resilient growth: use SilicaPower and ArgicinPlus

After potting, it is essential to preserve and enhance the resilience built up by the plant. Continue using ArgicinPlus, supplemented with our CE biostimulant SilicaPower, which provides an additional dose of silicon. The use of readily absorbable silicon when growing Phalaenopsis results in:

  • Harder leaves with stronger cell walls, creating a physical barrier against pests.
  • Darker green leaves, often slightly more compact depending on the cultivar.
  • Improved calcium and magnesium distribution throughout the plant.
  • Reduced drought stress through better water regulation.

Tip: If you use insect netting when growing Phalaenopsis, apply SilicaPower

Research by Wageningen University & Research shows that applying SilicaPower and using insect netting during Phalaenopsis cultivation provides clear benefits. The added silicon helps plants develop thicker, stronger leaves while growing beneath the net. The resulting physical barrier makes plants less susceptible to diseases and pests once the netting is removed.

Recommended dosage:

  • SilicaPower: 1 litre/ha/week via irrigation, or 0.5 litre/ha/week via foliar spray.  ArgicinPlus: 2 litres/ha/week via spraying.

Product choice depends on the conditions:

  • SilicaPower is effective under normal conditions.
  • ArgicinPlus has a broader effect and is recommended when the plant is under higher levels of stress.

3. Boost plant resilience to pot worms with ConSecta

After removing the insect netting, provide your Phalaenopsis crop with additional protection using the CE nitrogen fertiliser ConSecta, enriched with herbs.

Benefits of ConSecta in Phalaenopsis cultivation:

  • Stimulates the root environment, improving water and nutrient uptake.
  • Increases (doubles) the active root mass.
  • Makes roots less palatable to insects, meaning they are less likely to be eaten.

Research by the Stichting Control in Food & Flowers (SCFF) institute:

Trials show that the use of ConSecta increases plant weight by 7%, improves rooting, and reduces damage from pot worms due to less palatable roots. Thrips are also less likely to pierce treated plants.

Recommended dosage:

  • 5 litres/ha/week, added to the final 2 litres of irrigation.
  • Interval: every 7 days from the removal of the insect netting until the end of cultivation.

4. Healthy irrigation water – preventing blockages and biofilm

A well-functioning irrigation system is crucial for a trouble-free crop. Our natural water maintenance products, Blue Bac-1 and Blue Bac-2, maintain clear water and clean pipes without chemicals.

  • Blue Bac-1: keeps silos and water basins free from algae growth. Starting dose: 2 litres/500 m³, maintenance dose 1 litre/500 m³/month.
  • Blue Bac-2: prevents biofilm and pipe blockages. Dose 5 litres/ha/month.

Blue Bac-2 contains enzyme-forming bacteria and has been shown to positively affect root development and stabilise nutrient water pH.

Summary of cultivation plan by phase

Cultivation phase Application Product Effect

Pre-potting Dip/irrigation ArgicinPlus Faster rooting, fewer failures
Early cultivation Weekly SilicaPower/ArgicinPlus Strong leaves, reduced stress, improved growth
Cultivation phase 2 Weekly ConSecta Healthier roots, increased plant weight, fewer pot worm issues
Entire cultivation cycle Monthly Blue Bac-1 and Blue Bac-2 Clean water, root stimulation, no irrigation system blockages

Important:

Do not use ArgicinPlus or ConSecta in water to which hydrogen peroxide or another (chlorine-based) disinfectant has been added. These substances degrade the organic components in ConSecta, reducing their effectiveness. Please contact us for our solutions.
